A fruitful HKEF online Sharing Session on “The Making of History – FEI Asian Championships Pattaya 2019″

The HKEF online sharing session, “The Making of History – FEI Asian Championships Pattaya 2019″ was delivered this afternoon by its Event Director, Mr. Gerald Kuh.

Gerry is an experienced organizer of championship-level events and a top technical official active in Asia, Europe and North America. As the Event Director of the FEI Asian Championships Pattaya 2019, Gerry’s responsibilities included leading the Organizing Committee in bringing a successful inaugural continental championships in Asia.

Gerry took us back to 2013 when the idea of a continental championships in Asia was first conceptualized and the hard work of the Thailand Equestrian Federation over the years which eventually came to fruition in 2019. The FEI Asian Championships Pattaya 2019 is a significant milestone for the equestrian sports in Asia and Gerry believes that having a thorough understanding of all stakeholders’ needs and motivations is the first step to organizing an outstanding event. Gerry believes in the meticulous planning down to the very fine details because things happen very quickly during an actual event and you won’t have time to think or discuss. “You’d better make sure all thinking and discussions were done beforehand. By having a detailed plan, you save yourself a lot of trouble firefighting” Gerry said. Good planning is meaningless without a solid execution plan, and this could be achieved by rehearsing until it becomes a second nature.

Gerry went on to explain the operations of the whole event in detail from the building of new riding arenas to bringing in the horses from Europe, and from emergency protocols to the appointment of officials. He concluded the sharing session with a positive outlook on the next edition of the FEI Asian Championships in 2023.

The sharing from Ms. Amanda Bond, Head of Equestrian Affairs of the Hong Kong Jockey Club and the Hong Kong Team Manager at the Championships, as well as Mr. Yu Xuan Su, one of the Eventing Team Silver Medalist was icing on the cake. They shared how they prepared for the Championships and their wonderful experience during the Championships, all thanks to the vision and hard work of the Organizing Committee. Both agreed that the Championships was a great opportunity for Asian riders to prepare themselves in between the 4-year cycle of major Games.
