Completion of HKEF online Sharing Session “Journey of the First Chinese Female Jockey”

The HKEF online Sharing Session “Journey of the First Chinese Female Jockey” was held this afternoon. Ms. Sherie Kong, the first Chinese female jockey has shared her successful stories in both racing and equestrian with our members.

At the beginning of the online session, Sherie shared her past experience on how she became a jockey, the special connection she has with horses and some of the biggest challenges she’s faced on her way to becoming a true Hong Kong first.

Sherie joined an apprentice women’s class at the Hong Kong Jockey Club when she was 16 years old. She then trained for a year and a half to be an apprentice jockey, before riding her first professional race aged 17. Her most memorable ride was her very first professional race in 1993, aged 17 – that’s what gave her the title of being Hong Kong’s first female jockey! “Horses are just like people – each one has a different personality. The best jockeys must be able to ride any horse… good horses, bad horses and naughty horses! Teaching each horse how to listen to its rider and how to make it win makes a great jockey.’ said Sherie.

Apart from the road to become a jockey, Sherie also shared with us the challenges and difficulties that she had faced throughout her life and career and how did she overcome them. “The key to success is never give up.” Sherie exclaimed. The sharing session ended with a Q&A with our members.

The HKEF would like to thank Sherie for her time and sharing. We hope that all attendants found it interesting and encouraging, especially for our young members who want to be a jockey in the future.

Please feel free to share with us any suggestions or ideas for future online sessions. We really appreciate your opinion so we can provide a wide variety of relevant content.

Thank you for your kind attention.

Best Regards,
