Dear members,

Completion of Introduction to Judging Dressage Online presented by Dressage Anywhere

With the commencement of the new HKEF online dressage competition series on the Dressage Anywhere platform in October, the HKEF, in conjunction with The Hong Kong Jockey Club, decided to run two training sessions in collaboration with Dressage Anywhere.

The first one on “Introduction to Judging Dressage Online” by Ms. Nereide Goodman and Ms. Ruth Chappell, co-founders of the Dressage Anywhere platform was held yesterday evening. Nereide is a British Dressage List 1 judge, rider and trainer. She founded Wellington Riding with her husband, ran high profile shows and introduced dressage to music to the British scene. Ruth is the Operations Director of the platform and a horse lover. She managed cross-site digital development teams prior to Dressage Anywhere. Both of them shared the same vision of making the sport accessible to people worldwide and therefore established Dressage Anywhere in 2010.

Yesterday’s seminar was open to all HKEF members including riders, trainers, judges and all interested and 35 members have attended. The seminar started off with the brief introduction on online dressage and how the platform operates. “Dressage Anywhere competitions do not and have not for the last ten years, replaced live competitions but they are a great tool in helping riders along their dressage journey. Now in these unprecedented times they are a great way of enabling competitors to continue their sport where live shows are not allowed.” During the session, Ruth gave helpful advice on how to enter, film and deal with any problems that might arise online: “It was great to meet so many other dressage enthusiasts and talk about how Dressage Anywhere can help riders, trainers and judges at this most unusual time.”

According to Nereide, the general principles of riding and judging dressage are applicable to competitors and judges at both live and virtual shows. She explained the marking scheme and the Training Scale used by dressage judges, trainer and riders all over the world.

The highlight of the session fell on the discussion of the example test videos. Nereide detailed the master judge’s marks and comments for each movement and the reasoning behind each one. Included was useful advice on what the judge looks for and how riders can improve their presentation of the movements to increase their scores. “It was great to see so much interest in virtual dressage from obviously knowledgeable people,” said Nereide, “and we are looking forward to trying to help dressage in Hong Kong in these difficult times.”

The HKEF would like to thank both Nereide and Ruth for their time and effort in preparing this introductory seminar for us. We hope that all attended members found it useful and gained more knowledge in understanding judging and riding dressage online.

On top of the introductory session, another Dressage Judges Training for HKEF Listed Judges will be held on Tuesday 27 October 2020 6:00 – 8:00pm. The training is exclusively open to HKEF listed dressage judges in particular those interested in judging the HKEF online dressage competitions. Enrolled judges will be asked to judge videos of tests in their own time at home – links to tests will be provided. These tests will be discussed during the session and judges will be able to compare their marks and comments on their own scoresheet with those of the master judge. Questions will be invited.

Interested dressage judges please fill in the google form https://forms.gle/RDjvaRRzFGuKVGQR9 on or before Thurs 22 October 2020 6:00 p.m. (new deadline). Details of training and video materials will be sent to applicants by email upon successful registration.

Best Regards,

Hong Kong Equestrian Federation
